Transparent estimates, not contractor quotes

OutdoorCalc is a small editorial project built for homeowners who want a realistic number before they call three contractors and hope for the best.

Why this site exists

Most outdoor project cost pages are either vague national averages or lead-generation forms that hide the number behind a phone call. We wanted the opposite: a calculator that shows its assumptions, lets you change them, and gives you a range you can use to compare bids.

Every tool runs in your browser. We do not ask for an email, a phone number, or a project address to show the result.

How we estimate

  1. Planning ranges, not live quotes. We start with published retail and contractor cost ranges for fencing, concrete, soil, gravel, decking, and pavers, then round to a planning band.
  2. Labor ranges. Installation labor is based on published contractor ranges. Fence estimates also apply a state cost index; landscape materials are priced nationally.
  3. Project logic. The calculators add waste, gate posts, concrete volume, removal, and permit allowances based on the dimensions you enter.
  4. A range, not a promise. We show a low and high estimate because local site conditions and contractor pricing vary. When local data is thin, we widen the band instead of pretending to a precise number.

We review ranges quarterly and keep a source log for each category. If a price looks off in your market, send the source and we will check it.

Editorial standards

  • We cite the assumptions behind each calculator and guide.
  • We update cost guides quarterly and mark the review date.
  • We correct errors when readers or data show us we are wrong.
  • We do not accept payment for a better ranking or a better review.

What we are not

We are not contractors, engineers, or attorneys. The calculators are planning tools, not bids, structural advice, or permit approvals. Always confirm local codes, permits, and site conditions with a qualified professional.
